Emergency Medicine: The Unlikely Moment.

When Healthcare Professionals have to go to the Hospital

I was in New Jersey. It was Toms River to be exact. We were doing some clinical trials with some equipment that we are trying to sell the hospital. I was just there for support. At the time I was head of a team of sales reps.

They asked me to come along so that we could do the proper dog and pony show. If I showed up it would display more enthusiasm from our corporation for the business.

We stood in the operating room for hours upon hours. Each time we had a new patient, we would show how efficiently our equipment worked. Maybe I should mention that the equipment was FDA approved and so there was the appropriate amount of safety built-in to the equipment. It was just that this hospital had not used our equipment before and they had a budget set aside to buy some new equipment for this particular field.

So, after a few hours I was pretty hungry I thought about the fact that I had some TicTac’s in my car. I decided to leave the operating room and go downstairs I’ll to the parking lot to get some TicTac’s.

On my way back in, I came to a pedestrian crossing. A lady had stopped at the stop sign and so I thought she meant that I could walk/cross in front of her. No sooner than I was in front of her giant “old lady like” vehicle,  she accelerated. I ended up on the hood of her car.  A bit embarrassing for me because how does someone get run over in broad daylight?

It was a crazy experience.

I really didn’t expect that to happen. It happened so fast and I was simply laying on the front of her hood.

I didn’t feel injured. So I got up and waved at the lady. She didn’t even stop to discuss.

I went back to the operating room and told them what happened. Obviously, I wasn’t too hurt. Unfortunately it happened on company time so the company required me to go to the emergency room. It was just an odd situation. I thought I was there for a clinical trial but then I ended up in the ER.  But, I got to find out how the ER people responded in an emergency at that hospital. They did great. They obviously are well trained. The ER staff and first responders have to get quite a bit of training to be ready for anything.

I got to know a lot about that little hospital in Toms River New Jersey that day. I don’t remember if they ever bought the equipment, but I will never forget you toms River, and that old lady driver. I also never underestimate a New Jersey driver.  Don’t hate me, just understand it was my experience. 😉
